Maintaining Your Brake System is Crucial for Safety - Yours, Other Drivers & Pedestrians

Have an experienced Mears Technician inspect your brake system at least once a year. More often if you drive in extreme conditions.

During an inspection, the Technician will check brake pads, rotors, calipers, and brake lines for any wear and leaks.

Brake Pads

Brake pads press against the rotor to stop the car.
Over time, brake pads wear down and need to be replaced.
A typical brake pad should last between 30,000 to 70,000 miles, depending on driving style and conditions.
Squealing or grinding noise when braking, is a sign that brake pads need replacing.

Brake Rotors (also called Discs)

When you press your brake pedal, your calipers apply pressure to brake pads to stop the car.
The brake pads create friction on the brake rotor which generates heat.
The rotors disperse that heat throughout the vehicle, to keep your brakes from overheating.
Rotors don't tend to wear consistently
Both the pads and the rotors wear down with regular use.
When your rotors wear down very unevenly, you may experience a pulsating feeling when you press the brake pedal.
Because brake pads and rotors wear down unevenly (and because the braking system is essential to your safety), Mears recommends replacing both pads and rotors at the same time because it will ultimately save you money.
If another shop recommends you only change the brake pads, you find those pads wear out faster when they press against the uneven rotors. The result is then both rotors and pads need to be replaced, which means the cost of your brake maintenance is ultimately higher.

Brake Fluid

Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, leading to corrosion and potentially brake failure.
Brake fluid needs to be flushed out and replaced about every 2 to 3 years.
Brake Lines also need to be checked for leaks.
Where you usually park, look for signs of fluid leaks on the ground.
If you notice a puddle or spot, note where the spot is located under the car.
If possible, place clean paper towel under the vehicle to see if you can tell the color of the leaking fluid.
Your brake lines feed brake fluid to the brake calipers. Your calipers apply pressure to brake pads to stop the car.
Leaking brake lines decrease brake fluid pressure.
You may find the brake pedal feels spongy, or needs to be pressed way down to work when brake fluid is low.
You may also find the vehicle pulls to the side when brakes are applied.
